Consider the choices made by Annabelle, Betty, and other characters in the novel. What are the unethical choices that are made in the novel? What moral decisions are made? How do some of the decisions made blur the line between ethical and unethical choices?
Teaching Suggestion: It may be beneficial for students to assess the questions using a Venn diagram by labeling the sections as Ethical, Unethical, and Both, using the center portion to decide which decisions fall into both categories. It may also be helpful for students to create a list of characters to analyze.
Differentiation Suggestion: For students who would benefit from assistance with abstract thinking, it may be helpful to provide passages from the novel to analyze the ethical or unethical decisions of characters. For example, students may read the passage in which Annabelle decides to hide Toby to draw conclusions about whether her decision is ethical, unethical, or both.
