Long Answer
1. Holling and Danny Hupfer find out that Micky Mantle is not a nice man. The tides turn when Mrs. Baker arranges for some Yankee baseball players to join Holling, Danny, and Doug for a game of catch with new baseballs and mitts. The players even give the boys caps and jackets. Mrs. Bigio loses her husband to the violence in Vietnam. In her grief, she is sad and angry, lashing out at all the students, especially Mai Thi, who cries during lunch one day. Mrs. Bigio has lost her kindness and her hope in humanity because of the loss of her husband. Mai Thi has lost the same on account of Mrs. Bigio’s behavior—she already has to deal with bullying and taunting at the school and vandals leaving racist messages on the side of the Catholic relief home where she lives.
