The Trumpet of the Swan

Consider Louis’s difficult journey to overcome his inability to trumpet. How do other characters help in developing a plan to help Louis? What is Louis’s own role in overcoming his challenges? What obstacles does Louis overcome to accomplish his goal, and what traits and characteristics does he demonstrate in doing so?

Teaching Suggestion: Students may find it beneficial to list the characters who help Louis prior to describing the steps each took to assist in Louis’s journey. It may be helpful for students to analyze the novel chronologically beginning when Louis hatches.

Differentiation Suggestion: Students who benefit from assistance with abstract analysis may find it helpful to share and hear ideas about Louis’s journey in small groups before composing a written response independently. Additionally, a graphic organizer in the form of a flowchart might be helpful in analyzing the cause-and-effect elements of the novel.
