Kai has been torturing the Silencer, who was brought back to the castle, in hopes of learning about who he is and his power. However, the man has not yet revealed anything, which Kai reports to Kitt and his father despite his own frustration. The king is worried that the Silencer may be working with the Resistance, who have been trying to undermine the Elites’ power and resist the Ordinary killings. The King ordered the execution of the Fatals, or the most dangerous Elites, to prevent this from happening; despite this, some of them seem to have survived and have been helping the Resistance, like the Silencer.
Later, Kitt notices that his younger brother seems distracted during their sparring in the training ring. He starts teasing Kai about the girl who saved his life in the slums. They are joined by Jax Shields, a cheerful, 15-year-old boy. He is their adopted brother and has the ability to teleport himself over short distances. In the training ring, Blair is also practicing with Sadie Knox, a girl who can clone herself, and the two of them join the three boys. Kitt and Kai are worried when the girls tell them that Jax has been selected for the Trials, in addition to Kai, Sadie, and Blair themselves.
