Short Answer

1. Red-letter days are memorably good, like when he won the Dairy Queen Bike Race raffle. Black-letter days contain huge tragedy, like when the tornadoes struck his town. Both types of days are unforgettable and important. The difference comes in the situations that prompt them and Dan’s reaction. (Chapter 1)

2. Dan remembers the sun was out at the beach, but then clouds rolled in, the temperature dropped, and the wind picked up. He talks of “strong blasts of air” as they rode home. (Chapter 2)

3. Ryan has altered his life, and in the beginning of the book, he sees Ryan as an annoyance. Ryan has changed his mother’s life and the family dinners, and Dan is wistful for the time before his baby brother was born. (Chapter 3)

4. Arthur and Dan spend a lot of time together, including during the beginning of summer. They know each other well, as evidenced by Dan’s reflections at the beach about Arthur’s intense intelligence and his understanding of how many hot dogs his friend wants to eat.
