As Bella and Edward go to biology, they pass Angela. Edward realizes that he can repay her kindness towards Bella by arranging for her to be asked out by the boy she likes, Ben Cheney. In biology, while they watch a movie, Edward yearns for physical contact with Bella, which he denies himself. As he leaves her, he allows himself one touch of her cheek and this leaves her blushing. In Spanish class, Edward enlists Emmett’s help in arranging for Ben to ask Angela out. They have a fake conversation in front of Ben, prompting Ben to want to ask Angela out. Edward also listens to Mike Newton’s thoughts to observe Bella in gym class and sees how bad Bella is at sports. He also overhears Mike tell Bella he does not like her with Edward. Mike even says about Edward, “he looks at you like…like you’re something to eat” (255). This only amuses Bella, which makes Edward think that Bella has no sense of danger. This puts Edward in a good mood because he believes it is a good excuse to stay with Bella forever to protect her. The two go to Edward’s car together and arrange to spend time together on Saturday, with Bella driving.
