The novel has a very odd structure. McCann uses sections of varying length instead of chapters. There are 1,001 of them, and they count up to 500 and then in the second half of the novel they count backwards. Discuss what this structure adds to the novel.

In addition to the main narrative of Bassam and Rami, McCann includes numerous historical events, anecdotes, and facts. What does this help the novel accomplish thematically or otherwise that a traditional linear narrative could not?
